PinXit Arts & Events Management Agency Pty Ltd was founded by JD Mittmann in 2006. PinXit presents art exhibitions, consults on artwork and manages street art projects in Australia. JD Mittmann, a former documentary film-maker had just a brief stint as street artist and produced a few minor stencils. He has exhibited only in a few group exhibitions but, surprisingly a small work found its way into the permanent collection of the Australian National Gallery in Canberra. He soon put the scalpel and any creative endeavours aside to instead focus on his managing role in street art projects, curating exhibitions, consulting on artwork and facilitating workshops. In 2004 JD Mittmann recognised the potential of Melbourne's vibrants stencil art scene and the need to bring street art to a mainstream audience in an gallery context. He launched the first Melbourne Stencil Festival, a community based event presenting exhibitions, talks, films, workshops and live demonstrations to the general public. The event became soon talk of town, and was staged again for ten days in 2005. The opening night at the newly refurbished Meat Markets arts space had an amazing 700 visitors. Under his guidance the Stencil Festival evolved into an internationally renown and annual event. It became the largest showcase of street and stencil art in Australia with more than 3000 visitors annually. The festival exhibition toured regionally with the support with ArtsVictoria and national to Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. JD ran the festival for five years until 2008. The same year he started his own gallery, FamousWhenDead in West Melbourne. The gallery’s focus was again on street, stencil and urban art and acknowledged street art as a global phenomenon and the new art movement of the 21st century. FamousWhenDead presented over 40 exhibitions of emerging and established artists, from around Australia and overseas. The gallery closed its doors at the end of 2009.
